Fractal Collective and Justin de Jager collaborate with Japanese artist Daijiro Hama in And the Rest is Noise to research how noise can be perceived: somewhere between silence and buzz, between focus and distraction, between loyalty and letting go. In a versatile theatre piece, noise – usually understood as an unpleasant sound – is put into a broader perspective. In life we are surrounded by noise. A city that overwhelms, a phone that rings, a force that misleads…
Noise can distract us and get in the way of what is really important. How can we find our true essence in the middle of all this noise? How can we transform it into harmony?
And the Rest is Noise starts with a blank page. In an innovative soundscape and live painting, Fractal discovers the pure connection between sound, movement and monochrome visuals. Within this sphere they look for the purest connection between them. The rest becomes noise.

ABOUT FRACTAL COLLECTIVE
Fractal Collective is a group of self-educated creatives who developed themselves within theatre and the breakdance battle scene. Their lifestyle on the street is what brought them close. Realising that breakdance is more than entertainment, they started to research and deconstruct this art form to its fundament.
Their work brought them to nationally renown theatre companies, doing shows all through the Netherlands. They learned to recognise their theatrical abilities and found ways to use breakdancing for intimate storytelling.

geest niet langer verstoord.” – Jiddu Krishnamurti, philosopherIn And the Rest is Noise werkt Fractal Collective samen met Justin de Jager en de Japanse kunstenaar Daijiro Hama in And the Rest is Noise om de dubbelzinnigheid van ‘noise’ – ruis – te onderzoeken: het contrast tussen stilte en rumoer, tussen focus en afleiding, tussen loyaliteit en loslaten.
In een veelzijdig theaterstuk wordt ruis – vaak omschreven als een onplezierig geluid – in een bredere context geplaatst. Het leven zit vol ruis. De overweldigende drukte van de stad, een telefoon die rinkelt, een misleidende boodschap…
Ruis kan ons afleiden van wat werkelijk belangrijk is. Hoe komen we tot onze ware kern in het midden van al de verplichtingen en beperkingen van het dagelijks leven? Omgeven door ruis, hoe vinden we de harmonie?
And the Rest is Noise begint als een onbeschreven blad, waar door middel van beweging en geluid op geschilderd wordt. In een innovatieve soundscape met live painting ontdekt Fractal de pure verbinding tussen geluid, beweging en monochrome visuals. In dit speelveld zoeken de performers naar de pure verbinding die tussen hen bestaat. De rest is slechts ruis.

Fractal Dance Collective is een collectief van vier like-minded urban creatives die zich als autodidacten hebben ontwikkeld binnen straattheater en breakdance. Hun lifestyle op de straat bracht hen bij elkaar. Hun werk bracht hen in aanraking met gerenommeerde Nederlandse urban theatergezelschappen De dansers van Fractal leerden de theatrale waarde van hun discipline herkennen en wisten hun ervaringen uit de urban scene om te zetten naar intieme theater performances.
Fractal gebruikt dans, film en muziek om de straten naar het theater te brengen. Fractal gelooft in de theatrale kracht van breakdance als kunstvorm. Waar zij door haar acrobatische elementen vaak wordt gebruikt om indruk te maken op anderen, gebruiken zij deze danstaal om zichzelf te uiten. Zo schakelt Fractal van “impress” naar “express” en geven zij betekenis aan beweging.
