Het openingsprogramma van Afro_Vibes presenteert een selectie van spectaculaire voorstellingen van het festival uit o.a. Zuid-Afrika en Congo. Het welkomstwoord komt van Afro_Vibes artistiek leider Jay Pather die als curator, choreograaf, regisseur, professor aan de University of Cape Town, Director of the Institute of Creative Arts (ICA) en Artistic Director of Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre actief is.
Eerst is een stuk van Venus versus Modernity te zien, een confronterende voorstelling gebaseerd op het pijnlijke verhaal van Sarah Baartman en de exploitatie van het Zwarte vrouwenlichaam. Daarna krijg je een voorproefje van Carré Noir. In deze choreografische performance baseert Elizabeth Tambwe zich op ‘Zwart Vierkant’ van Malevich. We maken kennis met Unravel van visual artist Thania Petersen. In haar performance gebruikt Petersen als Zuid-Afrikaanse moslima het Islamitische wandtapijt om de bedreiging van deze spirituele plek tot uitdrukking te brengen. In zijn geheel zie je tenslotte Amaqhawe, de dansvoorstelling van choreograaf Mzo Gasa en dansers van Sibonelo Dance Project uit Kaapstad gaat over herinneringen, verzet en hoop.
En uiteraard is er na afloop een Afterparty met een guest DJ die je meeneemt op een swingende reis door de Afro sound van vroeger, nu en de toekomst.

Dansvoorstelling over herinneringen, verzet en hoop
De dansvoorstelling Amaqhawe van de Zuid-Afrikaanse choreograaf Mzo Gasa en dansers van Sibonelo Dance Project uit Kaapstad gaat over herinneringen, verzet en hoop. ‘Amaqhawe’ betekent ‘de helden’ in isiZulu en gaat over het doorzettingsvermogen van jongeren in Zuid-Afrika om dromen waar te maken. Amaqhawe is een provocatieve dansvoorstelling over de strubbelingen van jongeren die opkomen voor hun toekomst, voor betaalbaar onderwijs en een gelijkwaardige samenleving. Het stelt het publiek de vraag in hoeverre wij bereid zijn om te vechten voor waar wij voor staan. Amaqhawe is een oproep voor solidariteit en doorzettingsvermogen.

The opening program of Afro_Vibes presents a selection of spectacular performances from the festival, coming from, among others, South Africa and Congo. The welcome speech is given by Afro_Vibe’s artistic director Jay Pather who is active as a curator, choreographer, director, professor at the University of Cape Town, Director of the Institute of Creative Arts (ICA) and artistic director of Siwela Sonke Dance Theater.
First up is a teaser of Venus versus modernity, a confrontational performance based on the painful story of Sarah Baartman and the exploitation of the Black women’s body. Second, we get a taste of Carré Noir. In this choreographic performance, Elizabeth Tambwe relies on Malevich’s “Black Square”. After, we are introduced to Unravel by visual artist Thania Petersen. In her performance, Petersen uses the Islamic tapestry as a South African Muslim to express the threat to this spiritual place. Finally, we get to see the full performance of Amaqhawe. This dance work, by choreographer Mzo Gasa and dancers from the Sibonelo Dance project from Cape Town, is about memories, resistance and hope.
There will be an afterparty with a guest DJ who will take you on a swinging journey through the Afro sounds of the past, now and the future.

Dance performance about memories, resistance and hope
Amaqhawe is a dance performance by South African choreographer Mzo Gasa with dancers from Cape Town’s Sibonello Dance Project about memories, resistance and hope. ‘Amaqhawe’ means ‘heroes’ in isiZulu and is about the resilience and persistence of South African youth to realize their dreams. It’s a provocative performance about the struggle of young people speaking up about their future, affordable education and an equal society. It raises the question: how far are we willing to fight for what we stand for? Amaqhawe is a call for solidarity and persistence.
