La Meute (Wolfpack) is a journey in dance by Senegalese choreographer Babacar Cissé to the heart of human relationships, the dynamics of the group and to human nature.
“Homo homini lupus est” – man is a wolf to his fellow man. Words of Thomas Hobbes, one of the founders of modern European political thought and still guiding how we often view human interaction. Wolves and humans. We find the alpha, the dominant human; the beta, which has to lead the crowd; the omega, the scapegoat. Everyone is forced to take a place, to conform to the rules. The question is: integrate or emancipate. As hip-hop choreographer, Babacar Cissé knows how to connect the virtuoso individual expression of his dancers with the power of collective movement. It seems like a paradox: individual freedom versus collective interest. In La Meute (Wolfpack) he investigates the tension between the two.
“Hip-hop is about individual strength of the body. With my company I add an aesthetic layer by imposing restrictions from the outside that enforce a dialogue between the dancers and the world in which they move. You find this in the concept of my pieces, but I also in the physicality of the design. In La Meute (Wolfpack) I work with plexiglass plates on the floor that, because of their smoothness, forces a different movement language on my dancers. For me it is a way to bring the expressiveness of pure hip-hop to another level. To the goal of this work, the relationship with the other.” (Babacar Cissé)

La Meute (Wolfpack) is een reis in dans van de Senegalese choreograaf Babacar Cissé naar het hart van de menselijke relaties, naar de dynamiek van de groep en de menselijke natuur.
‘Homo homini lupus est’ – de mens is een wolf voor zijn medemens. Het is het adagium van Thomas Hobbes, een van de grondleggers van het moderne Europese politieke denken en nog steeds leidend in hoe wij kijken naar menselijke omgang. Wolven en mensen. We vinden de alfa, de dominante mens; de bèta, die de meute moet leiden; de omega, de zondebok. Iedereen wordt gedwongen een plek in te nemen, zich aan te passen aan de regels. De vraag is: integreren of emanciperen. Als hiphop choreograaf weet Babacar Cissé de virtuose individuele expressie van zijn dansers te verbinden aan de kracht van collectieve beweging. Het lijkt een paradox: individuele vrijheid versus collectief belang. In La Meute (Wolfpack) onderzoekt hij het spanningsveld tussen die twee.
“Hiphop dans gaat over individuele kracht van het lichaam. Met mijn gezelschap voeg ik daar een esthetische laag aan toe, door beperkingen van buitenaf op te leggen die een dialoog afdwingen tussen de dansers en de wereld waar zij in bewegen. Dat zit in het concept van mijn stukken, maar ook ik in de fysicaliteit van de vormgeving. In La meute (Wolfpack) werk ik met plexiglas platen op de vloer die vanwege hun gladheid een andere bewegingstaal bij mijn dansers afdwingt. Het is voor mij een manier om de zeggingskracht van de pure hiphop dans naar een ander niveau te tillen. Naar het doel van dit werk, de relatie met de ander.” (Babacar Cissé)
